Our Service
Exterior House Painting in Brisbane, the Redlands and Bayside
Our Services

Queensland is hard on the outside of a house. Strong UV, humidity and seasonal rain wear down the paint on timber, brick and render, and the north and west walls usually show it first. Barton’s Painting and Decorating paints the exterior of homes across the Redlands, Bayside and Brisbane, from brick and rendered homes to timber weatherboard houses and acreage properties around Mount Cotton. Every exterior repaint is carried out by our own team of qualified painters, and we never subcontract the work.
Exterior House Painting Services We Provide
An exterior repaint can cover the whole house or only the parts that need attention. These are the exterior surfaces we paint.
Weatherboard and Timber Exterior Painting
Timber weatherboards move with the heat and the humidity, so the paint on them needs good adhesion and a primer that suits bare timber. We wash the boards down, scrape and sand any flaking paint, fill gaps and nail holes, prime the bare timber and then apply the topcoats. If we find timber that has rotted through, we will point it out at the quote, because it needs to be replaced by a carpenter before it can be painted.
Brick and Render Exterior Painting
Painting brick for the first time is a different process from repainting brick that already has a coating on it. We check the condition of the surface first, then choose a masonry primer and topcoat to suit it. Rendered walls get the same check, and fine cracks are filled and sanded as part of the preparation so they do not show through the new colour.
Fascias, Gutters, Eaves and Trims
Peeling fascias, faded gutters and stained eaves can make a well-kept home look tired. We include them in a full exterior repaint, or we can paint them on their own as a smaller refresh when the walls are still in good condition.
Fences and Gates
Fences and gates are often the last things homeowners think to repaint. We paint timber, metal and rendered fences and gates, either on their own or at the same time as the house so the colours match.
Roofs, Decks and Verandahs
Roof painting and deck finishing each have their own preparation and products, so they have their own pages. Read about our roof painting service or our timber and deck painting service for the details.
How We Prepare Your Home for Exterior Painting
Most of the time on an exterior repaint goes into preparation, because preparation decides how long the paint lasts. Before any topcoat goes on, our team works through these steps:
- Wash the walls, eaves and trims to remove dirt and dust
- Scrape and sand loose or flaking paint back to a sound edge
- Fill cracks, gaps and nail holes, then sand them smooth
- Prime bare timber and any surface that needs a primer before the topcoat
Minor patching and filling is part of our paint preparation. If a wall or a length of cladding needs more than that, a builder or carpenter will need to fix it before we paint, and we will explain that at the quote so it does not come as a surprise later.
If your home is older and you think it may have lead-based paint, please tell us when you book the quote. Old lead paint changes how the surfaces are prepared, and we will explain how we plan to handle it at your home.
Paints We Use for Queensland Homes
We buy our paint locally through The Paint Place and choose exterior products for Queensland conditions, with strong UV resistance and durability in mind. The right product depends on the surface, because timber, brick, render and metal each need a different primer and topcoat. We will talk you through the options for your home and your colour choices when we quote. If you are still deciding on colours, our guide to the best whites and greys for Queensland light shows how strong sun changes the way a colour looks on an outside wall.
Painting Weatherboard Houses and Queenslanders
Weatherboard homes and traditional Queenslanders, with their fretwork, battens and verandahs, need careful preparation, particularly around the timber details. James learned restoration painting in Rockhampton, where he worked mainly on Queensland’s older colonial style houses. A full Queenslander repaint is a larger project with its own preparation, so we take on a small number each year. You can read more on our Queenslander painting and restoration page.
