Peeling Paint On Redlands Homes — Causes, Fixes And When To Call A Brisbane Painter
If you’re looking at peeling, flaking or bubbling paint on the outside of your Redlands home, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common things we get called out to fix across Cleveland, Victoria Point, Wellington Point and the broader Bayside — and in this area, salt air makes it worse. The good news: it’s fixable. The bad news: painting over it without fixing the cause is a waste of money.
Here’s what’s actually going on and what to do about it.

The Most Common Causes Of Peeling Paint In The Redlands
Moisture Getting Behind The Paint Film
This is the number one cause everywhere, and the Bayside’s humidity makes it more common here. Moisture gets into the substrate (timber, render, fibre cement) from behind — through leaking gutters, failed flashing, condensation in the wall cavity, or rising damp — and pushes the paint film off from behind. You’ll see bubbling first, then peeling.
Salt Air And Coastal Exposure
This is the Redlands-specific factor. Salt settles on exterior surfaces and — if not washed off regularly — breaks down the paint film over time. Homes in Cleveland, Victoria Point and anywhere closer to the water will notice paint degrading faster than homes further inland. It doesn’t mean the paint job was bad — it means your location is harder on coatings.
Poor Surface Prep On The Last Paint Job
If the previous painter didn’t properly clean, sand, or prime the surface before painting, the new paint never bonded properly. This is especially common when the old surface wasn’t washed to remove salt contamination before painting. New paint over a salt-contaminated surface is guaranteed to fail.
Paint Applied In The Wrong Conditions
Paint applied in high humidity, extreme heat, or just before rain won’t cure properly. Brisbane’s subtropical climate means painters need to be careful about timing — humidity in the Redlands can be high year-round, and painting when the air is too moist results in poor film formation.
UV Degradation Over Time
Queensland UV is intense. Over 10–15 years, UV breaks down the binder in the paint film. You’ll notice chalking first (powdery residue when you rub the surface), then cracking, then peeling. This is normal end-of-life for paint — not a defect, just time to repaint.
Wrong Paint For The Substrate
Oil-based paint over acrylic. Interior paint used outside. Cheap paint on a surface that needs a flexible coating. Wrong primer or no primer. All of these cause adhesion failure and peeling.
Timber Movement
Timber expands and contracts with moisture and temperature — and the Redlands’ humidity cycle makes this more pronounced. If the paint system isn’t flexible enough to move with it, it cracks and peels — especially on weatherboards, window frames and timber fascia.
How To Fix Peeling Paint Properly
Step 1 — Find The Cause
Before you touch a scraper, work out WHY it’s peeling. If it’s moisture-related, you need to fix the moisture source first. If it’s salt-related, you need to wash the surface properly before repainting. Painting over the problem just delays it.
Step 2 — Remove All Loose And Failing Paint
Everything that’s lifting, bubbling, cracking or flaking needs to come off. Scrape it back to sound, well-adhered paint or bare substrate. Don’t leave loose edges — they’ll lift under the new coat.
Step 3 — Wash And Prepare The Surface
In the Redlands, surface washing is critical. Salt deposits, mould, dirt and chalking all need to come off. Pressure wash, then let it dry completely. On bare timber, sand to a clean surface. On bare render, ensure it’s sound and not powdery.
Step 4 — Prime
Bare substrate always needs primer. The primer type depends on the surface — acrylic primer for most exterior surfaces, oil-based primer for tannin-bleed timbers, bonding primer over glossy surfaces. Skipping primer is how the next paint job fails too.
Step 5 — Two Topcoats Of Quality Exterior Paint
Two full coats of a quality exterior paint — not one thick coat, not cheap paint, not interior paint. Two coats gives you proper build, coverage, and longevity in the Bayside climate.
When To Call A Painter Vs Handle It Yourself
You Can Probably Handle It If:
- It’s a small area (less than a square metre)
- It’s at ground level, easily reached
- The cause is obvious (UV degradation on an old coat, no moisture issue)
- You’re comfortable with prep, primer and two coats
Call A Painter If:
- The peeling is widespread across multiple walls
- It’s on a second storey or anywhere needing a ladder/scaffolding
- You suspect moisture behind the wall (bubbling, soft substrate, mould)
- The last paint job was recent and already failing (may be a warranty issue)
- It’s on a timber surface with signs of rot
- You want it done once and done properly
What A Proper Repaint Costs
We don’t quote peeling paint repairs by the job — we quote by measured meterage, same as any exterior painting work. The rate depends on how much prep is involved (heavy scraping, salt washing and sanding costs more than a straightforward two-coat repaint over sound paint) and access.
Call us for a proper look and an itemised quote. We’ll tell you what’s causing the problem and what it’ll take to fix it properly.

How To Stop Paint Peeling Again
Fix moisture sources. Check gutters, downpipes, flashing, caulking around windows. If water is getting behind the paint, no paint system will fix that.
Wash regularly. In the Redlands, a yearly wash to remove salt buildup makes a real difference to how long your paint lasts. Especially on the side of the house facing the water.
Use the right paint system. Quality exterior acrylic over proper primer, matched to the substrate. Flexible enough to handle timber movement and temperature changes.
Don’t paint in bad conditions. Not in high humidity, not in direct sun, not when rain is forecast. Early morning on a mild, dry day is ideal in Brisbane.
Maintain it. Catch small cracks or chips early before they spread. A small touch-up now prevents a full repaint later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is My Paint Peeling After Only A Few Years?
The most common reason is poor prep on the previous paint job — especially if the surface wasn’t properly washed to remove salt contamination before painting. Moisture getting behind the paint film is the second most common cause in the Redlands.
Does Salt Air Make Paint Peel Faster In The Redlands?
Yes. Salt settles on exterior surfaces and breaks down the paint film over time. Homes closer to the water (Cleveland, Victoria Point) will see paint degrade faster than inland homes. Regular washing helps, but you’ll still need to repaint sooner than an equivalent home in Logan or the western suburbs.
Can I Just Paint Over Peeling Paint?
No. Painting over peeling or loose paint is a waste of money — the new coat will peel too because it’s bonding to a failing surface. All loose paint needs to be removed and the surface properly prepared before repainting.
Does Peeling Paint Mean There’s A Moisture Problem?
Not always — UV degradation, salt exposure and poor prep also cause peeling. But if you’re seeing bubbling (paint lifting in rounded blisters), soft or damp substrate underneath, or peeling concentrated around gutters/windows/bathrooms, moisture is likely the cause and needs fixing first.
How Much Does It Cost To Fix Peeling Exterior Paint?
It depends on the area, the amount of prep required, and access. We quote by measured meterage — same rate structure as any exterior repaint, with additional time priced in for heavy scraping, salt washing and prep work. Call us for a quote based on your specific situation.
Should I Use Oil-Based Or Water-Based Paint For Exterior Walls In Brisbane?
For most exterior surfaces in the Redlands, quality water-based (acrylic) exterior paint is the better choice. It’s more flexible than oil-based, handles UV better, and moves with the substrate through Queensland’s heat and humidity cycles. Oil-based paint is more brittle and tends to crack and peel sooner on exterior surfaces.
