Yes — in most cases weathered and greyed timber can be restored to a very good standard. The grey colour that develops on exposed timber is a layer of dead surface cells caused by UV breakdown. With the right preparation — cleaning, sanding or stripping back the grey layer, and allowing the timber to dry properly — we can get back to sound, healthy timber underneath and apply a fresh finish that brings it back to life. The extent of the restoration depends on how far the weathering has progressed and whether there is any deeper damage such as cracking or rot. We’ll assess this honestly at the quoting stage and tell you what’s achievable.

Both are valid options and the right choice depends on your timber, your existing finish, and what you want from the end result. Penetrating stains and oils soak into the timber and enhance its natural grain and colour — they tend to be easier to maintain because they wear gradually and can be recoated without full stripping. Paint sits on top of the surface and provides a more opaque, solid colour finish — it offers strong protection but requires more preparation work when it comes time to repaint, particularly if the surface has started to peel. We’ll talk through both options with you at the quoting stage and recommend what makes the most sense for your deck and your situation.

For stained or oiled decks in Queensland, a maintenance coat every two to three years is generally recommended — though high-traffic areas and north or west-facing decks exposed to strong afternoon sun may need attention sooner. Painted decks typically last longer between full repaints, but should be inspected annually for peeling or cracking, particularly around edges and end grain. The best indicator is simply the appearance of the timber — if it’s starting to look dry, faded, or is showing bare patches, it’s time to act before moisture gets in.

Preparation is the most important part of any timber finishing job. Depending on the condition of the existing surface, this can involve pressure washing to remove dirt and mould, sanding or stripping back old product, spot-treating any areas of damage or bare timber, and allowing the surface to fully dry before any new finish is applied. For stained or oiled surfaces, we also assess the porosity of the timber to make sure it’s ready to accept the new product. Skipping or rushing these steps is the main reason timber finishes fail prematurely — it’s something we take seriously on every job.

Yes — different timber species have different properties and respond differently to various products. Hardwoods like merbau and spotted gum require penetrating oils or stains with the right formulation to soak in properly, while pine and softer timbers may need a different approach. The age and condition of the timber, whether it’s been previously coated, and the level of exposure to sun and rain all influence the product selection.
