Deck Painting

Deck Restaining, Verandah Timbers and Decorative Fretwork Finished to Last

Timber is one of the most beautiful materials you can have in and around your home and one of the most demanding to maintain. Without the right treatment applied at the right time, even quality hardwood will grey, crack, and deteriorate. At Barton’s Painting and Decorating, we have a genuine passion for timber work. From deck restaining to decorative fretwork, we take the time to prepare surfaces properly and apply finishes that protect and enhance the natural character of the timber.

Our Timber and Deck Painting Services

Deck painting & restaining

Whether your deck needs a full strip-back and restain or a quality repaint, we assess the condition of the timber and recommend the right approach and product for your situation. We work with both paint and penetrating oil or stain systems depending on the timber species, the existing finish, and what will perform best long-term in your environment.

Verandah timbers

Verandah floors, posts, rails, and balustrades are constantly exposed to the elements and foot traffic. We treat these surfaces with the care they deserve — proper preparation, the right primer or sealer for the substrate, and a topcoat that holds up to Queensland conditions.

Doors & door frames

Exterior doors and frames take a beating from sun and rain and are often the first place paint starts to fail. We strip back, prepare, and refinish timber doors and frames to a clean, durable standard that makes a real difference to the front of your home.

Decks & Verandahs

Decks and verandahs are high-traffic, high-exposure surfaces that need specialist treatment to stay looking good and remain safe underfoot. We prepare, sand, and apply quality deck and timber finishes suited to Queensland conditions. See our dedicated timber finishing page for more information.

Timber window frames

Poorly maintained timber window frames can lead to moisture ingress and swelling — small problems that become expensive ones if left too long. We prepare and refinish timber window frames properly, sealing end grain and vulnerable areas so the finish lasts and the frames stay in good shape.

Decorative fretwork

Fretwork is one of the defining features of a Queenslander home — and one of the most painstaking things to paint well. It requires patience, the right brush technique, and care to get into every detail without build-up or runs. It’s the kind of work that separates a quality painter from a quick one, and it’s something our team genuinely enjoys getting right.

Why The Right Preparation matters

Good timber finishing is almost entirely about preparation. Stripping back old product, cleaning the surface, sanding out any grey or damaged areas, and allowing the timber to properly dry before any new finish goes on — these steps can’t be rushed. We see plenty of timber jobs that have failed not because of the product used, but because the prep wasn’t done right. Our team understands this, and it shows in how long our finishes last.

Every painting job we take on starts with thorough preparation. We clean surfaces, treat any issues, and make sure the timber is properly primed before we start painting. It’s the preparation that determines how long your paint lasts — and it’s where a lot of painters cut corners. We don’t.

Our team takes the time to do it properly, so you get a finish that holds up season after season.

Timber Painting FAQ’s

Have questions? Here are some of the most common questions we receive from homeowners and businesses across Greater Brisbane.

Yes — in most cases weathered and greyed timber can be restored to a very good standard. The grey colour that develops on exposed timber is a layer of dead surface cells caused by UV breakdown. With the right preparation — cleaning, sanding or stripping back the grey layer, and allowing the timber to dry properly — we can get back to sound, healthy timber underneath and apply a fresh finish that brings it back to life. The extent of the restoration depends on how far the weathering has progressed and whether there is any deeper damage such as cracking or rot. We’ll assess this honestly at the quoting stage and tell you what’s achievable.

Both are valid options and the right choice depends on your timber, your existing finish, and what you want from the end result. Penetrating stains and oils soak into the timber and enhance its natural grain and colour — they tend to be easier to maintain because they wear gradually and can be recoated without full stripping. Paint sits on top of the surface and provides a more opaque, solid colour finish — it offers strong protection but requires more preparation work when it comes time to repaint, particularly if the surface has started to peel. We’ll talk through both options with you at the quoting stage and recommend what makes the most sense for your deck and your situation.

For stained or oiled decks in Queensland, a maintenance coat every two to three years is generally recommended — though high-traffic areas and north or west-facing decks exposed to strong afternoon sun may need attention sooner. Painted decks typically last longer between full repaints, but should be inspected annually for peeling or cracking, particularly around edges and end grain. The best indicator is simply the appearance of the timber — if it’s starting to look dry, faded, or is showing bare patches, it’s time to act before moisture gets in.

Preparation is the most important part of any timber finishing job. Depending on the condition of the existing surface, this can involve pressure washing to remove dirt and mould, sanding or stripping back old product, spot-treating any areas of damage or bare timber, and allowing the surface to fully dry before any new finish is applied. For stained or oiled surfaces, we also assess the porosity of the timber to make sure it’s ready to accept the new product. Skipping or rushing these steps is the main reason timber finishes fail prematurely — it’s something we take seriously on every job.

Yes — different timber species have different properties and respond differently to various products. Hardwoods like merbau and spotted gum require penetrating oils or stains with the right formulation to soak in properly, while pine and softer timbers may need a different approach. The age and condition of the timber, whether it’s been previously coated, and the level of exposure to sun and rain all influence the product selection. We source quality products locally through The Paint Place and choose what’s genuinely right for the job rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
